Gig Tonite

Tonight (Tuesday Oct. 21st) I will be at Downing Street Pub with the wonderful jazz singer Tianna Hall from 8PM till midnight. It's a cigar bar, so if you like live jazz in a cozy dark-paneled room mixed with LOTS of smoke, come on over!

Political Notes

Not sure if either of the presidential big candidates has your vote? Here is a guy I agree with 100% of the time!

Studio Orchestra This Week

Hey all--

Hope you had a good weekend! This week we will be trying some different songs-- think of something you'd like to try in class. Here's what I am planning for each class so far. If you email me or post suggestions here on my blog, maybe we'll do your choices instead.

Monday/Wednesday Class:
Little Wing (by Jimi Hendrix)
Little Wing (by Stevie Ray Vaughn)
You Can't Always Get What You Want by the Rolling Stones (We tried this on Wednesday, I'd like to run it again). This is a performance from 1968, there are many other versions on YouTube.

Monday Night Class
River Deep, Mountain High by Tina Turner. There are other versions on YouTube, check them out.
You Can't Always Get What You Want. We are going to try a collaboration with the Choir. We'll listen to the original version in class.

Tuesday/Thursday Class
Stop This Song by Paramore. Should be fun, finally some distortion for the guitars.

The Rhythm Grid

In case you missed the Rhythm Grid in class, or you want to review it, I posted a video on YouTube here. I tried to keep the video short, so I don't know if it makes much sense. Let me know what you think.

Please bring in some suggestions of songs you want to try in class. You can also post suggestions here, or email me:

Studio Orchestra This Week

What we'll play:
This week we will play some Bob Marley songs to get a feel for reggae music. We got started in the MW and TR classes, Monday night class we will start this week!

Check out these videos on YouTube before class. These are songs we will or might play.

Listening Assignments:
If you haven't already brought a song in for us to listen to, bring one this week. Fill out the Listening Assignment sheet and put it in the binder after you play it in class. Remember: you will need to know the release date, so if you don't know, search on the Internet and find out! We will also be discussing what I call the Rhythm Grid in class this week.

Journals:
You should be starting your journal entries. There will be a notebook in class each week and blank journal papers. Create one journal entry each week, and clip it in the binder in the tab for your last name. You should have 9-11 journal entries for the semester. At least 4 will be due by week 6 (Week of Nov. 3rd).

What's next:
We will begin trying some songs that we think might work well for each class. Got an idea? Let me know! You can post here, or tell us in class.

Studio Orchestra This Week

We will be playing some blues in all the classes this week. We got started playing last week in 2 of the 3 classes, Monday night class we will play this week! (I still do not have a room  assignment for Monday night, but I should get it when  get to HCC in the morning.

You should all bring in some music for us to listen to this week. Pick ONE song, something you like. We will listen to about 3 student's selections at the beginning of each class.

Drummers, please bring some sticks! I still haven't had time to buy any.

See you in class.
